My practice centers on improvisation, experimentation, and the intersection of the physical and metaphysical—the point at which science can no longer fully explain what we experience.

In this current body of work, I’m exploring the idea of portraiture. What are we, really? We inhabit these bodies, these finite physical forms. But what about the energy that animates our cells, molecules, and atoms—and, at a larger scale, the cosmos itself? Is that, too, part of what we are? These paintings emerge from that question and are inspired by the ineffable essence of specific friends, family members, and collectors.

My process is highly sculptural—both additive and subtractive. Materials are built up on the paper, then scraped away with a palette knife until the surface is entirely flat. Despite the physicality of their making, the finished works have virtually no depth. They become something like abstract, handmade photographs.
